Brie Fleming
I began running competitively at the age of 8 and have been passionate about the sport ever since. My journey started in elementary school at Green Valley, continued through Scribner Middle School, and culminated at New Albany High School, where I competed in both Cross Country and Track & Field from 4th through 12th grade. During my school career, I became a multi-time state qualifier.
At age 10, I gained national recognition after winning a USA Track & Field event—just seven seconds shy of the course record, despite running through four inches of snow. By age 17, I placed 2nd at the AAU National Cross Country Championships.
In 2009, I returned to Scribner as a coach, and a few years later helped re-establish a local AAU program. The original club, Little Highlander Running Club (LHRC), was coached by Clyde Miller and Dave Simpson but disbanded in 2006, my senior year. With Clyde Miller’s blessing, I revived the program in 2013, renaming it Southern Indiana Running Club (SIRC) to better reflect our inclusive focus on athletes from Floyd, Clark, and surrounding counties.
My long-term goal is to help build a 50-year legacy with SIRC, retiring from coaching at age 76—with the support of our incredible coaching team. I also spent three years training at the Olympic development level and continue to race competitively in the USATF and AAU Masters divisions. In 2022, I earned a national title, finishing 1st in the country in my division.
In 2021, I completed my first full marathon—a bucket list achievement. It was a great personal milestone, and also a firm reminder that I never plan to run that far again!
